About Artpoint

History

George Silas and his brother founded the Point of Art Society in 1998, leasing two buildings from the City of Calgary. The original address was 1139 St SE, later changed to 1039 17th Ave SE in the early 2000s.

The Artpoint building was originally a commercial space, which once housed a laundry. Over the years, the building underwent many changes, including the addition of a large gallery and a smaller one called the Red Gallery. Heritage Weavers and Spinners were also added as tenants.

In 2022, the City of Calgary notified Artpoint of its intent to reclaim the building to construct the Green Line. A one-year lease was signed. In 2023, after much deliberation, Artpoint decided to continue as a society. The Heritage Weavers moved to the Austrian Canadian Club, with Sue Heathcote, Darlene Lobos, and Amy Trewhitt relocating to a small studio there. A few other artists moved to home studios.

In September 2023, Artpoint moved to 205, 625 11 Ave SW, a space leased from C-Space Marda Loop.
