AROUND THE WORLD

This exhibit is a collaborative project developed by members of ARTPOINT Gallery and Studios Society and Heritage Weavers and Spinners Guild, who responded to an invitation to participate in an exhibit based on the theme “around the world”. As we met and began to discuss possibilities for the exhibit, questions and themes began to emerge in relationship to each participant’s work:

What drew me to participate?  How does my work fit into this theme?

What inspiration for new work does the theme inspire? How has the experience of travel influenced my work, the significance of location in my understanding of self and other people in the world?

We questioned what we meant, individually and collectively, by “around the world”?   Did we mean, art works in the tradition of artists such as Gauguin, Sargent, Turner, whose travels became important inspirations for their paintings?  Where does the journey around the world begin—where we were born, or in resettled locations in Canada or beyond in unfamiliar locations on this earth?

Collectively this visual travelogue explores deep themes of inner and outer spaces. Emotional, spiritual, aesthetic, and historical connections to place and to artists and artistic traditions run throughout these works.

We hope the exhibit will encourage you to go beyond the role of “tourist” as you engage with works displayed.
